Aug 24, 2009 – There are many travelers, actually 1.3 million of them a year, who take cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida. About a third of those consider a car rental to Port Canaveral, usually from Orlando airport. What amazes me is how many of those people will rent a car for the entire duration of the cruise. Most of them stay at hotels near Port Canaveral (http://www.portcanaveralhotelsinsider.com/hotels-near-po ...) the night before the cruise and then park it at the Port Canaveral parking lot at the cruise terminal for the three or seven nights they are on the cruise. Not only are they paying for a rental car every day it is sitting unused in a parking lot, they are paying parking fees of $15 a day on top of that. I don’t know if these people are new to the world of car rental, but there is something called rental car drop off service. You pick up the car at one location and turn it back in at another. There are six car rental locations at Port Canaveral that are close to the port and have drop off service. Dollar Rent A Car, Budget Car Rental, Thrifty Car Rental, Avis Rent-A-Car, Hertz Rent a Car, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car all have drop off service at Port Canaveral. Now, these six also have free shuttle service to the cruise terminals. National Car Rental has a location a little further away in Cocoa Beach, but they don’t provide transportation to the port. But if they have the lowest rate, then paying cab fare may be worth it. It’s still better than paying for a car sitting in a parking lot for three to seven days. So, when you consider car rental at Port Canaveral for a cruise, you rent it from and drop it off at one of these locations before the cruise and pick it back up when you arrive back off the cruise ship.
